How it works

01

Introduce yourself

Send the puppy application or just a message. Tell us about your home, your days and what you are hoping for. No fee, no obligation.

02

We call you

A real conversation, usually half an hour. We answer everything and we ask a lot in return. A $500 deposit holds your puppy once we both agree.

03

Homecoming

At nine weeks your puppy comes home with you, or travels in the cabin on a flight nanny’s lap. Never in a cargo hold.

Aura, a fawn merle Great Dane puppy, sitting on a blanket at home

Nobody here has ever slept in a kennel

We got our first Great Dane in 2009 — a mantle bitch called Bess who took up most of the sofa and had bad hips by two years old. Everything we do now came out of that. Puppies are whelped in the spare room and moved to the kitchen at three weeks, where they meet the hoover, the doorbell, the grandchildren and the farrier long before they ever meet you.

  • Whelped and raised inside our home, never in a kennel
  • Both parents OFA cleared — hips, elbows, cardiac echo and thyroid
  • Never merle to merle; every merle puppy BAER hearing tested
  • Vet examined, microchipped and vaccinated before travel

If you ever cannot keep your dog — for any reason at all — he comes back here. No fee, no judgement. That applies for his whole life, not for two years.

What families say

“We asked a lot of questions and got a lot of straight answers, including a few we did not want to hear. They told us our first choice of puppy was wrong for our house and suggested a different one. They were right. Two years on, Birch is the best-tempered dog I have ever lived with.”

“The health file that came with Odin was thicker than my mortgage paperwork. Hips, cardiac, thyroid, the whole line going back three generations. Our vet actually said she wished every breeder did this.”

Daniel Okafor

Columbus, OH · Odin, blue

“The flight nanny texted me photos from the gate, from the plane and from baggage claim. Willa walked off that flight wagging. I had been dreading the travel and it was the easiest part of the whole thing.”

Common questions

How many litters do you raise a year?

Two, occasionally three. Every litter is raised in the house, underfoot, and we cannot do that honestly with more. If you find us at a moment when nothing is available, the answer is to wait — not to be sent elsewhere.

Can we meet the parents?

Yes. Every approved family is welcome to meet the dam, and the sire when he is ours. We ask for the approval conversation first, because the dogs live in our home with our children and we do not take drop-in visits.

What has my puppy had before it comes home?

Two rounds of core vaccinations appropriate to age, worming at two, four, six and eight weeks, a microchip, a full veterinary exam within the week before travel, and a written record of all of it. See the Vaccinations page for the schedule.

How worried should I be about bloat?

Informed, not frightened. Gastric dilatation-volvulus is the single most common cause of sudden death in Great Danes and it is an emergency measured in minutes. We send every family home knowing the signs, and we discuss prophylactic gastropexy with you. Read the Bloat & GDV page — it is the most important page on this site.

How do I reserve one?

Start with the puppy application. We read every one, then call you. If it is a good match on both sides, a $500 deposit holds your puppy and comes off the balance. The balance is due before travel. Nothing is held on a verbal promise.

Tell us about your home. We will tell you the truth about ours.
